Kano in one page
The commercial capital of northern Nigeria and one of its oldest cities.
Kano is the largest city in northern Nigeria and has been a commercial centre for a thousand years, sitting at the southern end of trans-Saharan trade routes. The old city walls, the Emir's palace, the dye pits at Kofar Mata and Kurmi Market are all still in use or still standing.
It is a working commercial city rather than an administrative one, and the trading culture is the thing corps members notice first: almost everything is negotiable, and negotiating is expected rather than resented.
The heat is dry rather than humid, which most people from the south find easier than they expected — but it dehydrates you faster. Drink more water than thirst suggests.
